Dental implants have a remarkable success rate of over 98%. Implants are highly resilient, and they are designed to be a permanent teeth replacement solution. While you should never expect your dental implants to fail or become damaged, it can happen. In fact, even if you take proper care of your dental implants, damage is possible. Rest assured, however, that dental implants can be repaired just like natural teeth. In many cases, you won’t need to start your dental implants surgery all over again. Most repairs are simple and straightforward.

Permanent Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Forever

Your dental implants are meant to be a permanent restoration for your smile. However, just like your natural teeth, you can’t assume they will last forever. While dental implants won’t decay or become infected like real teeth, they can still chip, crack or break under certain pressures.

Types of Implant Damage

Most types of implant damage involve harm to the implant restoration that sits on top of the actually implant. This may include a chipped crown, broken denture or other damaged restoration. In such cases, the restoration itself can be repaired or replaced without having to disturb the implant that lies underneath your gum line.

In rare cases, a poorly placed implant may have difficulty fusing to the surrounding jaw bone. Patients may experience a loose implant within the first several months after it is placed. With modern imaging and advanced surgical planning, this is not likely to occur. However, anything that disturbs the density and health of your jawbone can compromise the implant itself. This may include advanced gum disease surrounding your implant. Again, with routine dental checkups, your dentist should detect evidence of gum disease long before it starts to destroy your underlying bone.

If you are experiencing any changes in the way your dental implant looks, feels or functions, see your dentist right away. As with many types of dental damage, the sooner you seek treatment, the more conservative and affordable your repairs can be. Your dental implants were a notable investment, do everything you can to protect them and repair them when needed.
