If you are getting ready to undergo oral surgery for the placement of dental implants, you may be wondering what to expect after dental implant surgery. While the recovery will vary from individual to individual, most people experience a rapid and uneventful recovery after undergoing this type of procedure. You can expect to experience some discomfort. The degree and severity will depend on a number of factors including the length of your procedure. Most people experience only minor discomfort after the placement of dental implants and are able to get relief from NSAIDS or Tylenol alone. In some cases, narcotics may also be needed. In most cases, this discomfort goes away within five days or less.

You can also expect to experience some minor swelling and/or bruising. This is usually minimal and will peak at 48 hours and then be negligible by the 5th day. Mild discoloration (bruising) of the facial skin is also possible but rarely happens in individuals under the age of 50. If it does occur, it will usually clear within three to five days after your surgery.

You may experience some minor bleeding after the placement of dental implants, although it is rare. If it does occur, it will usually appear within the first twenty-four hours after surgery and then quickly subside.

As with all surgical procedures, it is important to keep track of any changes you experience and to keep your doctor informed about any problems or complications. It is important to keep in mind the fact that you have an important role to play in your own recovery. Your nutrition and oral hygiene play a major part in how quickly you recover from oral surgery. Getting the appropriate amount of rest is also extremely important.
